NEWS FROM THE NURSE

New Changes for  2012
Illinois has passed a new regulation for the Tdap immunizations (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis), effective this next school year, 2012-2013.   This is due to increasing numbers of cases of pertussis or whooping cough in the state of Illinois.  This regulation applies to all students entering sixth  through 12th grades.

The regulation states that “any child entering sixth grade shall show proof of receiving one dose of Tdap vaccine regardless of the interval since the last DTaP, DT or TD dose.  DTap is what most children get up until kindergarten age, but a few have received the DT (childhood diphtheria & tetanus), or Td (adult tetanus & diphtheria) given after kindergarten age.   Also, students  grades 6 through 11 who have not already received a Tdap are required to receive one dose of the vaccine regardless of the interval since the last DTaP, DT or Td dose.  Almost all of our 9th graders on up, have already received a dose of Tdap, so they will not need to repeat the immunization before graduation, however if it is not documented that they have received the Tdap, they will have to receive this vaccine.

The Mercer County Health Department is planning to hold clinics on April 25th at the intermediate in the morning and the junior high in the afternoon.  A clinic will be held at the high school on May 9th.  More information will be sent home regarding these clinics.   A letter will be sent home in February to students in grades 6 thru 11 who will be needing to receive this vaccine, or for those who need to show proof of the vaccine.
